OTTAWA -- The home of the Ottawa Senators is getting a new name. Scotiabank Place will be renamed the Canadian Tire Centre, the team announced Tuesday. Senators owner Eugene Melnyk said the new strategic partnership between Senators Sports & Entertainment and the Canadian Tire Corporation included, but is not limited to, naming rights for the arena. Melnyk said the agreement had been in the works for the past two months and will officially take effect July 1, 2013. The Senators signed a 15-year, $20-million agreement with Scotiabank in 2006, but certain parts of the agreement were set to expire which included an opt-out by the Senators on the naming rights. With this in mind Melnyk approached Duncan Fulton, senior vice president of corporate affairs for Canadian Tire Corporation. "They made up their mind very quickly to tell you the truth and after that they moved so fast when they saw this opportunity," Melnyk said. "In the end, its very extensive and youll see a lot of big changes. "Its very, very important for us to have somebody thats that committed to the community and the fans." Scotiabank will continue to remain involved with the Senators and will remain as the official bank of the team under a long-term agreement. The new agreement with Canadian Tire comes with an opportunity for renewal every ten years, with an unlimited amount of renewals. Neither party was willing to unveil the terms of the deal, but Fulton said "it was certainly an attractive deal or we wouldnt have done it." "The deal we have essentially allows us to be here as long as we would ever want," Fulton said. "This is a long term deal for us and our history in sport and in this region should give everyone comfort that were here for a very, very long time." Canadian Tire is an original sponsor of the Senators and was involved with the team from the moment the city was awarded the franchise in 1990. This will be the fourth name change since the building opened Jan. 15, 1996 as The Palladium. It then went on to become the Corel Centre just over a month later and eventually Scotiabank Place on Jan. 19, 2006. In addition to the naming rights, the partnership with Canadian Tire includes building, digital, scoreboard and in-ice signage as well as support for community-based programs, an enhanced partnership between Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities and the Sens Foundation to provide support for families in financial need to get children involved in sport, as well as a number of other title sponsorship opportunities for various Senators initiatives. Canadian Tire will also become the title sponsor of the Senators Sportsnet broadcasts. The partnership will feature branding opportunities for a number of the retail entities that fall under the Canadian Tire Corporation such as Sport Chek, Sports Experts and Marks, a clothing retailer that will serve as the official outfitter of event and facility staff with assorted apparel from Denver Hayes. Fulton went on to add that there will also be a number of new community initiatives to help increase the number of kids taking part in sport. Having the ability to have so many of its properties and programs tie into the Senators is what made the deal so appealing to the Canadian Tire Corporation. "If it was just an infrastructure deal I know we would have said no," said Fulton. "It was seeing that we could get so many of our different family of companies in there and activate it all. The whole thing just made a ton of sense as we went through it." While some changes will take place immediately, Fulton admitted that due to the scope of the agreement some will be implemented over time. OXNARD, Calif. -- Dallas defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence faced his teammates in the spring, apologizing for a violation of the NFL substance-abuse policy that will sideline him for the first four games this season. The next step was addressing the suspension publicly, which the third-year player did on the second day of training camp Sunday with the Cowboys. My disappointment is its on me, Lawrence said. I messed up. I learn from my mistakes and I just have to move on and get everything right.Lawrences ban was one of three in the offseason for the Dallas defense under the substance-abuse policy. Fellow pass rusher Randy Gregory will miss at least four games and faces a longer suspension over another failed drug test. Linebacker Rolando McClain already has a 10-game suspension. The 24-year-old Lawrence is the only one of the three to report for camp.Gregory is in rehab, raising doubts about whether he will play at all a year after sliding to the Cowboys late in the second round of the draft when he failed a marijuana test at the NFL combine. McClain didnt report after staying away from the team most of the offseason. Both are on the reserved-did not report list, subjecting each to $40,000 daily fines and leaving Lawrence to answer for suspensions that snared three starters.I cant speak for nobody else. I just know my situation, said Lawrence, who led the Cowboys with eight sacks last season. I just made a mistake. Everybody makes mistakes. But its what you do from it.Lawrence is also coming off back surgery in the offseason and is unlikely to go full speed in camp with the suspension looming as well. Hes eligible for preseason games, so the coaching and medical staffs will have to decide how far to go to get him ready for Oct. 9 against Cincinnati. You have to get them ready, coach Jason Garrett said. Hes going to get plenty of work.dddddddddddd. I do think we can achieve both things, where he still gets his work and lays a foundation for the season, and you still get the other guys an opportunity.Lawrence missed the first half of his rookie season when he broke his foot early in training camp two years ago. He started to show up late that season, getting one sack in the regular season and another in the playoffs. He started slowly last season before getting seven sacks in the final eight games. Now hell have another slow start because he wont be out there until Week 5.Im going to deal with it by trying to help my young guys and making sure theyre ready, Lawrence said. Im just going to work as hard as I can off the field, you know? Just by doing film studies and giving them little keys or whatever they need. Im here for the team.Garrett said Lawrence delivered that message in the spring.Hes a good person, Garrett said. Hes a good teammate. He works hard. He wants to be the best he can be and he wants his team to be the best it can be. I think hes acted accordingly since then.Game notes QB Tony Romo skipped the second camp workout Sunday in order to be available for the first two padded practices Monday and Tuesday. The routine will be similar to 2014, when he was coming off back surgery and had roughly a day off for every two workouts. ... Garrett said several other veterans will get periodic days off, including Dez Bryant.
