Acquired just hours after the news broke that Daniel Alfredsson had decided to sign with the Red Wings following 17 seasons in Ottawa, Bobby Ryan said hes ready to hit the ground running with his new team north of the border. Speaking with Bryan Hayes and Jeff ONeill on Leafs Lunch on Monday, the newest Senator said replacing the long-time captain wont be easy, but is excited to come to a team and city he thinks is a "nicer fit" than his prior situation in Anaheim. Although he wasnt traded for Alfredsson, Ryan knows he comes to Ottawa with lofty expectations, but says he is ready to assume a leading role, hopefully as the top winger on Jason Spezzas right side. "Theres enough players there. You look at Spez whos probably going to take over that role if thats the decision that is made," Ryan said in reference to who he thought would take on more of a leadership role with Alfredsson moving on. "Hopefully I just get to jump in and play with him and he makes my job as easy as hes made it for other guys in the past." Speaking with Spezza and Ryan Getzlaf after he was dealt, Ryan said he expects to establish an immediate chemistry that will hopefully help him regain the high-level scoring touch he displayed in the four seasons prior to 2012-13. "I think I got lucky and Im coming off playing with one of the other best in the west coast," Ryan said in reference to Getzlaf. "Talked to Spez as well and hes certainly excited. We had a quick conversation with him about trying to get together a few weeks before the season starts just to start to try and figure each other out right away." The 26-year-old who was the Ducks second overall selection in the 2005 NHL Draft is coming off an 11-goal, 30 point season, but had previously posted 30-plus markers in four straight seasons. Ryan said part of the reason for his struggles was the trade speculation that made it seem like each time he stepped onto the ice could be his last in Anaheim. "It changes things," Ryan said. "It makes it tougher to produce, makes it tougher to get your mind around things on the ice sometimes. I think this is going to be a blessing in disguise for me. Hopefully I can come in and be part of something pretty special like they have had going on in Ottawa for a while now." The former OHL standout said he should have no problem adjusting to the climate change that comes from moving from California to north of the 49th, considering the four seasons he spent playing in Owen Sound. "Its going to be something completely different, but Im familiar with it obviously playing in Owen Sound. I understand the weather. I cant wait." Moving to a more hockey-centric environment is something Ryan also sees as a positive, saying he is especially excited to participate against the Senators rivals in Monreal and Toronto. "I guess mayhem is the best word for it," Ryan said. "Im going to get to be part of a couple of pretty cool rivalries there. You got Anaheim and L.A. and Anaheim and San Jose, but I dont think its going to be quite like anything weve ever seen, so Im looking most forward to those games." Cheap Cardinals Jerseys . RIO DE JANEIRO -- Dont tell leaders of Budapests bid that they are underdogs in the race for the 2024 Olympics. In fact, they say, the three other cities should be afraid of us.The Hungarian capital, which is competing against former Olympic host cities Los Angeles, Paris and Rome, has long been seen as the outsider in its campaign to stage the games for the first time.We do not approach in any way the underdog status because we dont have it, bid chairman Balazs Furjes said Tuesday. Budapest is not an underdog in this competition. All four bid cities sent leaders to Brazil to observe the Rio de Janeiro Olympics and pitch their case to IOC members. Tuesday was Budapests first chance to present its bid at an international news conference.Budapest is an equal participant and has all the chances just like the others to finish No. 1, Furjes said when asked about the underdog label. We are honored to participate in this competition. As much as we are kind of afraid of them, they should be afraid of us in the spirit of Olympic values and friendship.Los Angeles, which hosted the Olympics in 1932 and 1984, is bidding to take the Summer Games to the United States for the first time since Atlanta hosted the event in 1996. Paris seeks to stage the Olympics on the 100th anniversary of the last time it hosted the games. Rome hasnt hosted the Olympics since 1960.The International Olympic Committee will select the host city in September 2017.Furjes said Budapest would offer a low-risk Olympics and refreshing model for compact and intimate games.Budapest, he said, would be the right choice in 2024 after a run of four mega-cities in a row -- Beijing, London, Rio de Janeiroo and Tokyo.dddddddddddd IOC President Thomas Bachs Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms open the chance for midsize global cities to host the games, Furjes said. The Budapest leaders claimed the average travel time between venues would be no more than 13 minutes, with most sports sites located within a 10-kilometer radius of the city center. Only five new additional venues would need to be built at a total cost of $350 million, they said.Budapest also played up Hungarys long Olympic tradition, noting that it is the only country in the top 10 of the all-time medals list that has yet to host the games. The government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban built razor-wire fences last year on the borders with Serbia and Croatia to keep out migrants and refugees trying to reach Western Europe. Orban has said Hungary does not want any migrants and described them recently as poison for the country.Furjes was asked how the governments policy fits in with the Olympic bid and with the participation of a 10-member IOC refugee team in Rio under the Olympic flag. The refugee crisis is one of the largest global challenges of today, he said. This is truly a global challenge and only a global solution can work. ... What sports can do is bring people together. Im proud to be a member of the Olympic movement welcoming the refugee team here in Rio and giving us the experience how sport can change lives for the better.---Follow Stephen Wilson on Twitter: www.twitter.com/stevewilsonap.
