Old School Runescape, the proudly antiquated model of Runescape that still looks and plays like the game I snapped innumerable hours in to when I really should have been studying, is obtaining a raid. A fantastic raid needs good rewards, so when the Theatre of Blood was announced late last year, players were not able to find out exactly what clearing the RS gold multi-man challenge could earn them. Jagex reacted with Justicar armor, a brand new best-in-slot armor place (above). There was one small problem: gamers totally hated it.
In reality, they hated it so much , for months, the Old School community dogpiled the armor on the 2007scape subreddit and memed it into hell and backagain. They memed on it so tough that Jagex is currently completely changing the armor's design. Virtually all of Old School Runescape's upgrades go through player polls, but this is the first time that the suit of armor has been forged in a passion of memes.
The irony is that while players hated the'final' armor shown earlier this year, they adored the prototypes shown when the raid was declared. Originally, the Justicar armor was part of a trio of armor sets, West tells me, but as the Theatre of Blood moved from obscure idea to real material, the armor shifted with it. Players said there was enough DPS equipment but not enough tank equipment, so it had been narrowed down to just one armor set. And if they were only going to use one set, Jagex guessed they might as well create a new one based on the armor worn with the raid's big bad.
"We believed changing it up a bit made sense," West says,"but players weren't quite on board cheap Runescape gold with the original proposal we shared on stream. And then, well, Reddit went wild."The memes came out hard and fast. Many demanded a return to the model designs. Others thought the new armor did not look tanky enough and liberally provided some choices, with some calling for a more extreme redesign.
