SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS -- Nico Rosberg kicked off his Belgian Grand Prix in fine style, topping Lewis Hamilton by 0.7s and setting his fastest lap with the Halo on his car.Rosberg was one of four drivers to test the Halo device in the morning and went out on the super-soft compound, the quickest tyre available this weekend. The 1:48.348 he set remained the benchmark for the rest of the session, with Hamilton finishing 0.7s down despite running his own super-soft lap without the Halo on his car. Both Mercedes drivers started the session with new power units, meaning Hamilton has now used turbochargers and six MGU-Hs this year and will incur a 15-place grid penalty for Sundays race as a result. If Mercedes opts to use more components over the course of the weekend to stockpile them for the rest of the season, the grid penalty may still increase and force him to start from the back of the grid.?Rosberg was joined in the Halo test by Red Bulls Daniel Ricciardo, Toro Rossos Carlos Sainz and Force Indias Nico Hulkenberg. Despite its rejection for next year, the FIA is determined to carry out extensive research of the Halo ahead of a planned implementation in 2018.Kimi Raikkonen finished third, less than 0.1s down on Hamilton despite his fastest time being set on the soft compound. Sergio Perez was the surprise of the session, splitting the Ferrari drivers for fourth position, finishing half a second up on Sebastian Vettel. Hulkenberg looked pacey in the other Force India, finishing in sixth. Daniel Ricciardo finished seventh for Red Bull ahead of Williams driver Valtteri Bottas and teammate Max Verstappen. Red Bull will certainly hope to improve on seventh and ninth later in the weekend. Esteban Gutierrez rounded off the top ten despite several complaints about his brakes during the session.Romain Grosjean finished 11th in the other Haas. The French driver appeared to be struggling with his car, running wide late in the session. Felipe Massa finished 12th for Williams, ahead of Marcus Ericsson, running a Sauber with a raft of new upgrades which the team has finally introduced after its recent takeover. Carlos Sainz finished 14th, splitting Ericsson and his Sauber teammate Felipe Nasr.Manor new boy Esteban Ocon finished an impressive 16th in a session which saw him overshoot his pit box on entry. The Frenchman finished the session over a second clear of teammate Pascal Wehrlein, who set his time on a harder compound and finished behind Daniil Kvyat and Jenson Button in 19th in a frustrating morning for McLaren. Renault drivers Kevin Magnussen and Jolyon Palmer took the next two positions, with the latter complaining of a loss of power in the second half of the session. Fernando Alonsos morning lasted for just three laps, with a water leak curtailing his running -- a disappointing start with Hondas upgraded power unit and the fact the Spaniard came into the weekend hoping to spring a surprise on some of McLarens nearest rivals. BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Sabres general manager Tim Murray is fine with defenseman Rasmus Ristolainens decision to practice with the team even though hes not under contract. That doesnt mean Murray believes the Sabres top defensemans presence in Buffalo will have any effect on negotiations. No, Murray told The Associated Press while breaking into a laugh on Friday. Unless you ask him that when he got here that he got all lovey-dovey and wants to play for what we want to pay him.Though Murray said the two sides are still negotiating, he wouldnt say whether progress is being made with the restricted free agent two weeks before the Sabres open the regular season.Ristolainen is a restricted free agent whose rights were retained by the Sabres in June. After representing Finland in the World Cup of Hockey, Ristolainen reported to Buffalo on Thursday in what was regarded as a sign of good faith.Though hes not allowed to play because hes not under contract, Ristolainen is practicing with the team and also taking part in meetings.Ristolainen is not making himself available to reporters, and messages left with his agent, Mike Liut, were not returned.ddddddddddddMurray said he was somewhat surprised by Ristolainens request to practice with the team. Thats a switch from other restricted free agents such as Winnipeg defenseman Jacob Trouba, who has requested to be traded.Murray didnt see anything wrong with allowing Ristolainen to practice, saying hed rather the player be in Buffalo than working out elsewhere.Ristolainen was selected by Buffalo in the first round of the 2013 draft and has played three seasons with the Sabres. Last year, Ristolainen led the team in averaging more than 25 minutes of ice time per game, and led Buffalo defensemen with 41 points (nine goals, 32 assists). In saying he has no control over contract talks, coach Dan Bylsma took a diplomatic approach addressing Ristolainens situation.I think it shows a lot from both the player that he wants to be here practicing with his team, and it shows a lot from us, a lot from Tim, that we want him here as well, Bylsma said. The contract will take care of itself. ' ' '
