VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Sven Baertschi scored his second of the night with 2:35 left in regulation Tuesday as the Vancouver Canucks beat the Minnesota Wild 5-4.Brandon Sutter and Ben Hutton each had a goal and an assist, and Loui Eriksson also scored for Vancouver. Henrik Sedin and Troy Stecher had two assists each and Ryan Miller stopped 38 shots.Ryan Suter scored the tying goal late in the third for Minnesota. Jason Pominville had two goals, Jason Zucker added a goal and an assist, and Nino Niederreiter had two assists. Darcy Kuemper got the start with Devan Dubnyk given the night off and finished with 30 saves.Baertschi, who has struggled to rediscover his scoring touch that emerged toward the end of last season, tipped Stechers point shot to cap a crazy third period that saw the teams combine for five goals.Tied 2-2 through two periods, Eriksson gave Vancouver its first lead 1:09 into the third with his sixth of the season when he finished off a scramble after the Wild failed to clear the puck from their zone.Baertschi, just back in the lineup after missing the last two with a foot injury, then tipped a shot past Kuemper for his third at 2:08 to give the Canucks a two-goal edge. But the Wild struck right back when Zucker blocked Erik Gudbransons point shot and moved in alone on Miller before beating the Vancouver goalie with a nice backhand deke at 3:20 for his third.Kuemper then made a great stop on Eriksson off a feed from Markus Granlund just over a minute later to keep the Wild within one.Suter rewarded his goalie by scoring his fifth on a point shot that went in off Gudbranson, who was attempting to block the shot with his leg, with 5:49 left in regulation.Trailing 2-0 midway through the second with just 10 shots on the night, the Canucks came to life on back-to-back power plays to tie it. Sutter tipped Stechers blast from the point at 9:23 for his sixth before Hutton pinched down from the point on another man advantage just 1:59 later to roof a loose puck at the side of the net for his third.Huttons goal marked just the second time this season Vancouvers power play had connected twice in the same game, and the first since Oct. 22.Already without Christopher Tanev, who has been out with a lower-body injury since early November, the Canucks were missing the other half of their top defensive pairing after it was revealed Monday that Alexander Edler required surgery on a broken finger suffered in Saturdays shootout victory in Colorado. With the youngest defense in the NHL as a result of Edlers injury, the Canucks knew they would have to play a simple, error-free game, but were instead exposed early in the first. Luca Sbisa, one of the veteran members of the current corps at age 26, misplayed a puck at the Vancouver blue line to allow Niederreiter to swoop in on Miller before Pominville was buried the rebound for his fourth into an open net at 5:07.The Canucks thought they had tied it with 5:18 left in the period when Henrik Sedin scored what looked to be his sixth, but the call on the ice was overturned after Minnesota challenged that Sutter had interfered with Kuemper.Pominville then made it 2-0 with his second of the game and fifth of the season on a shot off the rush at 3:24 of the second that beat Miller under the blocker.Game notes Edler is expected to be out four to six weeks. ... Henrik Sedin had two assists to give him 69 points (13 goals, 56 assists) in 81 career games against Minnesota. ... NEW YORK -- When teams dangle veteran stars for prospects this offseason,?New York Yankees?general manager Brian Cashman will do his best to say no.New York missed the playoffs for the third time in four years and at 84-78 finished four games out of an AL wild card. The Yankees struggled to a 9-17 start, then improved in the final two months of the season after bringing up catcher Gary Sanchez, right fielder Aaron Judge and first baseman Tyler Austin.First-base prospect Greg Bird, a late 2015 sensation, returns following shoulder surgery, and more youth could bubble up from the minors during the season.Right now, a veteran pitcher such as White Sox ace Chris Sale probably is not a good fit for the rebuilding Baby Bombers. We have an exciting, young nucleus thats coming, Some of its arrived, some of its still coming, Cashman said Wednesday.Youd have to be one piece away, and I would not recommend that type of decision-making as we approach the 2017 season. I think that would be a dangerous approach.Cashman spoke for nearly an hour, assessing 2016 -- our offense was bad; we had a bad offensive team -- and detailing his approach for 2017. He anticipates competitions among young players for first base and right field during spring training. There will be some hesitancy to forego giving the kids a chance to take it, and certainly that can create some problems if they dont, he said. But that doesnt preclude me from being open-minded to any and all opportunities that present themselves.Seven years removed from its last World Series title, the Yankees traded Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller, Carlos Beltran and Ivan Nova for prospects during the summer and released Alex Rodriguez. They cut payroll to roughly $224 million and saved $2.38 million in luxury tax in the process, but still will pay about $26.5 million.Yankees average home attendance dropped from 41,995 in Derek Jeters final seasoon in 2014 to 39,430 last year and 37,820 this season.ddddddddddddAverage viewers on the YES Network fell from 288,000 in 2014 to 259,000 the following year to 218,000 this season -- Mets games on SNY averaged 263,850 this year, up from 242,667 in 2015. (Comcast dropped the YES Network this season in New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.)They wanted us to press that reset button and in many cases tired of seeing what was transpiring in the first few months of this year, the been-there, done-that, its time to do something that was not part of our DNA, Cashman said.He likened this period to the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the Yankees failed to make the playoffs until a renaissance led by Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada.I remember when I was the assistant farm director while we were collecting a lot of the talent like what we collected, Cashman said. Who knew we were actually sitting on a dynasty waiting to happen? None of us.Cashman also:Anticipated that he and Girardi would go through the final seasons of their contracts in 2017 and ownership will then decide after the season whether to offer new deals.Wants to reach a new deal with pitching coach Larry Rothschild; the other coaches are signed through 2017.Even though Sanchez has supplanted Brian McCann as the starting catcher, he envisions a role for McCann as a backup catcher and designated hitter. But that doesnt preclude me from listening (for a potential trade), either.Views Luis Severino as starting pitcher but is concerned about a sophomore slump that resulted in a 3-8 record and 5.83 ERA. If youre a student you go back and do your homework to brush up for your test, so you can master the next test. He was unable to do that from the starting spot all year long. ' ' '
