RIO DE JANEIRO -- Katie Ledecky set an Olympic record Sunday in her preliminary heat of the womens 400-meter freestyle, falling 0.34 seconds shy of her own world record with a time of 3 minutes, 58.71 seconds.Ledecky said after posting the second-fastest time in history that she purposely took it out easy.I didnt want to spin my wheels too much, so I just kind of backed off and kept it easy up front, she said. I know thats how I swim my 400 the best, when I can be strong at the end.In Sunday nights final, Ledecky will chase the 3:58.37 she posted two years earlier at Pan Pacific Championships in Australia.I know what my times are, and I have my goals, she said. The next-fastest qualifier was Britains Jazz Carlin, who was more than 4 seconds behind. American Leah Smith posted the third-fastest time in the prelims. Before the prelims, the first individual event of Ledeckys Rio Olympics, her coach, Bruce Gemmell, offered a word of warning to the 19-year-old American. He had to remind me this wasnt a hundred, Ledecky said. The issue had never been something Gemmell had to worry about before. But that changed after Ledecky swam the anchor leg in the final of the 4x100 freestyle relay late Saturday night. Yet she didnt appear to show any lingering effects from that race.Ledecky said she didnt get to bed until around 2:45 a.m. local time. After interviews, a warm-down swim and a massage, she stayed to eat at the Aquatics Center with food prepared by one of her favorite chefs from the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She said she slept until around 11 a.m. before heading to the pool for her 400 free prelim. In that race, she was 0.64 seconds behind her world-record pace at the halfway point before narrowing the gap to 0.03 seconds with 50 meters to go. As the raucous Brazilian crowd cheered her on, Ledecky couldnt quite finish the job.On Sunday night, the result could be different.Thats the easiest its felt in the 400, so Im excited for tonight, she said. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Cheap Adidas Superstar Shoes . PETERSBURG, Fla. EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Adrian Peterson was placed on injured reserve Friday by the Minnesota Vikings, another sign that his time with the team could be over following surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.NFL teams can pull one player off injured reserve per season, so the Vikings would be able to activate the leading rusher in franchise history sometime down the stretch if he were to heal swiftly. The likelihood of him returning this year, though, is slim given the typical recovery time for the injury he suffered last weekend in the game against Green Bay.The move created an opening on the active roster the Vikings didnt immediately fill. Also Friday, left tackle Matt Kalil had surgery to repair a labrum tear in his right hip. He was operated on by team physician Dr. Chris Larson, who performed Petersons procedure at Twin Cities Orthopedics the day before. The Vikings called Kalils procedure successful, but hell miss the first game of his career Sunday when the Vikings (2-0) visit Carolina. Kalil, who will be replaced by T.J. Clemmings, also was placed on injured reserve.Kalil struggled through the first two games at less than full strength. He has started all 66 games, plus two in the playoffs, since the Vikings made him the fourth pick in the 2012 draft out of USC. Kalils contract will expire after this season.Three Vikings starters were sent into surgery this week.Defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd had an arthhroscopic procedure to clean up cartilage damage in his right knee done Thursday by Dr.dddddddddddd James Andrews. No timetable for his return has been provided by the team, but Floyd had a similar operation done last season on the left knee. He missed three four games then, and coach Mike Zimmer has not hidden his disappointment with Floyds inability to stay healthy.Shamar Stephen has filled in for Floyd in the defensive line rotation.Hes getting better as a pass rusher. Hes played the run very well. Hes growing up. Hes talking a lot more, Zimmer said. Before you couldnt hardly get any words out of him, so now hes a lot more vocal. But hes been playing good. The only good news on the injury front this week was the return of cornerback Xavier Rhodes (right knee) to practice. He was a limited participant Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but hes on track to be available against the Panthers.I think theres a good possibility, Zimmer said. Well see.Wide receiver Stefon Diggs suffered a groin injury this week that prompted the Vikings to keep him out of practice Friday, but Zimmer said that was a precautionary decision. Diggs was not listed on the injury report, meaning he will play on Sunday.---Online:AP NFL website: http://www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL coverage on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
