Ahead of this weeks Premier League showdown, Rod Studd recalls the night when Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis produced the greatest match. The Power faced his former protege in the semi-final of the 2013 Grand Slam of Darts and together they compiled a record-breaking 32 maximums as Taylor completed a famous 16-9 victory. This high-quality clash is considered the best of all time and Taylor and Lewis will meet again in the Premier League this Thursday in Exeter, live on Sky Sports 1. Rod Studd watched from the commentary box while Taylor traded 180s with Lewis and looks back on a magical match in 2013... Relive the 2013 Grand Slam semi-final between Adrian Lewis and Phil Taylor Taylor had Lewis had both averaged well over 100 when they had met in the World Matchplay final that summer, so so there was this great sense of anticipation when they collided again that November in Wolverhampton.Phil was enjoying a lengthy winning streak and seemed nigh on unbeatable, but Lewis had become his great rival and had started to beat his old mentor once or twice on television. I think we were all expecting a great match, but nothing like what actually unfolded. It was mind-boggling.We kind of got the inkling that something special might be in the air when Taylors first throw was a 180. In fact, he hit two 180s in the first leg, and then went 2-0 up. Lewis then came back with a couple of 180s to make it 2-1 and it developed into a really high-class tit-for-tat tussle. It became an addictive repetition of 180s, you just wanted more and more. Every 180 took you further into fever pitch. Rod Studd They were exchanging one leg after the other, with neither player being able to gain supremacy, and they were both playing incredible darts. The 180s just kept on coming and it became ludicrous. I think we had moved past 20 in total when Wayne Mardle famously said: Its literally laughable. It became an addictive repetition of 180s, you just wanted more and more. Every 180 took you further into fever pitch. At this ridiculous rate of heavy scoring - and Phil had two finishes of 167 and 160 - you just got carried away on a crest of a wave. I know the crowd did as well, along with everyone watching on television. The Power pullled away with a typical display of ruthless finishing It carried on like that until Lewis led 8-7 and then Taylor tapped the turbo, put on the afterburners, and ended up winning 16-9. The fact that Phil won quite easily on the scorecard did not detract from the greatest game of darts ever played on television. Phil himself said it was the best ever game seen on TV. He has played in some pretty amazing matches, so thats got to be the ultimate compliment, if the greatest of them all thinks that.Adrian ended up averaging 111 and Phil averaged 110, while Lewis had 18 maximums and Phil had 14. The combined 221 average of the two players has never been bettered. The quality and the relentless standard of it makes it the most memorable game ever played. Taylor embraced his former pupil at the end of the match At that time, 32 180s was a record in a PDC match, but Gary Anderson and Lewis broke it in the final of this years World Championship when they fired in 34.Watch Taylor and Lewis share the oche again on night five of the Premier League this Thursday, starting at 7pm on Sky Sports 1. The first time I ever played against Ashleigh Johnson was at a tournament in Florida when I was about 12 years old. Ashleigh was a goalie and I noticed her right away. She was incredible, getting out to her legs like no one I had ever seen. I remember getting super competitive trying to score on her, even trying to match how high she got out of the water. My team ended up winning, but I never forgot how talented Ashleigh was.Years later, when Ashleigh began training with us on the U.S. womens water polo team, I knew for a fact this was where she belonged. At the time, Ashleighs main focus was simply on making the team, not history. She was just going out there to do her thing and trying to achieve her dream. She never thought of herself as different. In reality, Ashleigh did stand out. First off, all of the women on our national team are from California and competed in college there as well. Ashleigh is from Florida and goes to Princeton. Moreover, she is the best goalie in the world, and considerably the best player in the world.I can tell you from experience that finding an opening to score on Ashleigh is difficult because, unlike most goalies, she plays with an attacking mentality. Most goalies have a defensive mentality whereas Ashleigh attacks the ball. Shell leave her cage to anticipate the steal and often dares opponents to shoot against her. When a shot flies past me, Im already swimming to offense because I know Ashleigh will block it.Ashleigh is changing the way water polo is being played. Of course, shes changing the game in other ways, too. She is the first African-American woman ever to play on the U.S. womens water polo team, and was instrumental in winning the second straight gold medal for our program at the Olympics this past summer in Rio.ddddddddddddn the last couple of years, Ashleigh has recognized a door was opened for her to be a role model, and she hasnt shied away from walking through it.I remember a team meeting during our training for the Olympics in which we talked about female empowerment. Ashleigh spoke about the impact she could have on others, both in and out of our sport. She said that growing up she never had anyone like herself to look up to in water polo, and now she could be that person for other young African-American girls. She could show what was possible.Ashleigh is simply a pleasure to be around. Whether shes at a function getting an award or around little kids, her kindness and poise make people feel comfortable when theyre around her. She has an incredible light that she emits, and her smile lights up the whole room. When I face Ashleigh in practice, I am brought back to the first time we played against one another as little girls back in Florida. I want to get a shot past her, I want to beat her, but she never, ever, makes it easy. I am lucky to have someone who brought out the best of me then, and continues to bring out the best in me today. I know my strong, intelligent and kind teammate is going to make a big difference in the lives of countless others, just as she has for us.More on Ashleigh Johnson?
