DENVER --?Paxton Lynch fought off nerves Sunday in his first NFL start as the Denver Broncos quarterback. But he couldnt overcome the Atlanta Falcons.Atlanta sacked Lynch six times as he finished 23-of-35 for 223 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the Broncos 23-16 loss, their first of the season.Lynch looked unsettled in the pocket at times against a Falcons defense that entered the game 30th in the league in total defense, 31st in pass defense and with just four sacks.Obviously you have some butterflies in your first NFL start, Lynch said. Its not a preseason game and your team is 4-0. You are excited about that, but you have to focus on the team and winning the ballgame. After that first drive, I was ready to go and ready to play with those guys.Lynch, the Broncos first-round draft pick in April, started while Trevor Siemian recovers from a left shoulder injury. Siemian, who had practiced on a limited basis this past week, was ruled out after a brief throwing session Saturday.Lynch fumbled twice -- the Broncos recovered both -- and before a surge in the fourth quarter, which the Falcons entered leading by 17, he had just 101 yards passing.?I am upset, obviously, because we lost, Lynch said. I am kind of happy that I got the first one under my belt. My first start with these guys and having a chance to play with them. If I get put in that situation again, I will know how to handle it a little bit better than I did the first time. I am glad I got the experience, but I am also upset that we didnt come out with the win.The Broncos also didnt provide Lynch the best of support, rushing for 85 yards in their third consecutive game with less than 100 yards rushing. The Broncos pass protection was spotty at times, as well, with right tackle Ty Sambrailo being replaced in the fourth quarter. We have to help him better, us as coaches, Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said. We got down early in the game. We were committed to running the ball [Sunday] and tried to do that early. We did not run the ball well. We get down by 13, something like that, and were struggling to protect him. We put him in a really tough situation. Thats not the type of game you want to put him in.It was uncertain whether Lynch would start the Broncos Thursday night game at San Diego, which stands as the shortest turnaround between games they face this season.Siemian said after Sundays game that he had thrown a little bit at the teams practice Saturday when it was determined he would not play against the Falcons. Siemian also said he still believed he was close to returning to the lineup but would see how he felt this week and what the teams medical staff said in the coming days.Well see. ... Ill take it one day at a time and get right [Monday], Siemian said.Said Lynch: Im just going to keep approaching it like I have been approaching it. I am going to take it day by day, and if my number gets called again, then I am going to make sure I am ready to go out there and play. If my number isnt called, I am going to make sure to be ready to play if I have to go back in the game again. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessees backcourt sustained two major losses, with Andraya Carter forgoing her final season of eligibility and Tea Cooper out the entire season with a knee injury.Carter issued a statement Wednesday saying she was ending her college career to recover from a series of injuries. Lady Volunteers coach Holly Warlick said Cooper injured her left knee while playing basketball at home. That leaves Tennessee with only nine healthy scholarship players. Cooper made 15 starts as a freshman last season and averaged 8.6 points and 2.1 assists. She ranked fourth on the team in scoring. Its the card weve been dealt and weve got to go with it, Warlick said. The kids that we have, theyre solid. If we didnt have the summer weve had, Id be worried. But we have put in the time, theyve put in the effort and it shows. It really, really shows. I feel really confident in what our kids can do.Warlick said sophomore guard/forward Meme Jackson has undergone arthroscopic surgery on her left knee and is expected to be ready for the start of preseason practice.Tennessee also announced Wednesday the hiring of Heather Ervin as director of recruiting operations and player personnel. Sharrona Reaves was hired as the Lady Vols assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in April, replacing former Tennessee player Kyra Elzy, who spent four seasons as an assistant and associate head coach. Elzy was rehired by Kentucky this spring. The Lady Vols went 22-14 last season and set a school record for losses. They recovered down the stretch to reach a regional final for the fifth time in the last six years.Recruiting troubles in the past year prevented the Lady Vols from upgrading their roster much since the end of the 2015-116 season.dddddddddddd Their additions were freshman shot-blocking specialist Kamera Harris, Winthrop graduate transfer Schaquilla Nunn and ASA College transfer Cheridene Green, who wont play in the 2016-17 season as she recovers from knee surgery.Carter made 82 career starts at Tennessee and posted career averages of 6.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists. Last season, the 5-foot-9 guard made 25 starts and had 4.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists while averaging 26.2 minutes.Carter underwent season-ending shoulder surgery during the 2012-13 season and was redshirted. After loving the game so much for so long, it is hard to imagine forgoing an opportunity to play for one more year, Carter said. Yet, the past four years have taken a toll on my body that I can no longer ignore. The injuries that I once effortlessly pushed aside and played through are beginning to catch up to me and have long-term effects.Warlick said Carter also had been dealing with a knee problem. We discussed only practicing twice a week or only playing in games, but anyone who knows me knows those options were unacceptable to me, Carter said. If I was going to continue playing basketball, I wanted to practice, condition, lift weights, be with my teammates and be able to work as hard as I could to get better every single day.Carter graduated in August 2015 with a degree in communication studies and will remain in school this year working toward her masters degree in sport psychology. Warlick called Carter a great ambassador to this program. The Lady Vols open the 2016-17 season Nov. 11 at James Madison. ' ' '
