Southampton manager Ronald Koeman was upset with midfielder Victor Wanyama for his tackle that led to his red card in the 1-0 win against West Ham. Maya Yoshida gave Koemans men a ninth minute lead and they held on for all three points despite playing for most of the second half following Wanyamas straight red for a reckless lunge on Dimitri Payet.Wanyama has now been sent off three times this season, including for a similar incident during Southamptons 1-0 defeat at Norwich last month. Jamie Redknapp described Wanyama’s challenge on Payet as reckless and felt that the red card was justified Thats too much, Koeman told Sky Sports. We already mentioned after the Norwich game, you cant make that tackle on that place of the pitch. Its the same for this situation. Its a hard tackle and you give the referee the possibility to give you a red card.Despite the sending off, Koeman was satisfied with his sides performance, particularly praising his defence. Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster was pleased to earn his fifth consecutive clean sheet Im very pleased with the final result, the Dutchman said. It was a difficult game from the start but more difficult after the red card of Wanyama. But I think we defended fantastic and even with one less on the pitch we had the best chances to score the second goal.Koeman also took the time to single out the recent performances of Fraser Forster and said it was no coincidence the England goalkeepers return has coincided with an upturn in Southamptons fortunes. Fraser Forster produced a sterling performance for the Saints We had that also last season. Hes a fantastic goalkeeper, Koeman added.Hes so quiet but gives a lot of confidence to the defenders. Its not a coincidence that when he is back weve started keeping clean sheets. Its not a criticism to Maarten Stekelenburg or to the rest of the goalkeepers but sometimes you have one behind who has a little bit more luck in his life.He came after a big injury but hes demonstrating how good he is as a goalkeeper.Southampton are now up to seventh just two points behind West Ham following victory over Slaven Bilics side and Koeman is confident his side can enjoy a good end to the season. Southampton celebrate the only goal of the game Our ambition is always to try to do it better than last season, he said. Thats very difficult because to end last season in seventh position was fantastic. But we have good players, we have a good team we have a really good belief at the moment and a lot of confidence. Were looking forward to the rest of the season and if Leicester can be the first, maybe Southampton can be the sixth. And although English league clubs are unlikely to splash cash in January, Arsenal and Chelsea could be tempted to strengthen their squads with new strikers. Robbie Cattanach was on the bench sitting next to Matt Jurman the day the pair made their debut together for Sydney FC in 2007.And while Jurman has since entrenched himself as one of the A-Leagues most robust defenders at Moore Park, Cattanach failed to add to his solitary top-level game, instead plying his trade with Canberra Olympic in the National Premier Leagues. On Wednesday, the full-time policeman can get one over Jurman and his old club when Olympic face off against the might of the Sky Blues in an FFA Cup semi-final at Viking Park.I trained with them for quite a long time on two separate occasions. I only got the one game, but its not necessarily personal, Cattanach told AAP.It was a good time when I was there and I enjoyed it. I learned heaps, got along with the playing group. I was lucky enough to get one game back in the day.I wasnt bitter that nothing else happened. I enjoyed the one game and the trip to Perth, had a good time, and it was a good experience. The 32-year-old remembered the likes of former Sydney FC stars and current assistant coaches Steve Corica and Terry McFlynn keen to help develop his game as a youngster. He saw back then what they were like as on-field coaches, and believes this years A-League squad are reaping the rewards of their knowledgge.ddddddddddddhey were all approachable, really welcoming. I was training there for a while and they treated me as one of them, Cattanach said. They know a lot about the game. I think it shows that their coaching staff, not just (coach Graham Arnold), how well drilled the team is this year.Theyre beating A-League teams 4-0 and doing it pretty comfortably. And its not just in the past two weeks - theyve done it all pre-season and FFA Cup as well.Despite being fortunate in avoiding clashes with A-League teams for the entire tournament, Canberra have proven a plucky defensive outfit in their run to the semi-finals.They didnt concede a goal in their three knockout meetings. However Cattanach admits that will be put to the test against a Sydney FC side oozing attacking talent, including captain Alex Brosque and imports Filip Holosko and Bobo.To say youre going to try and dominate the game is probably not going to happen, he said.Youre going to have to just hang in there and expect to do a fair bit of defending and hit them on the counter or whatever. Were under no illusions of how good they are. Theres going to be a fair bit of defending involved. ' ' '
