SUVA, Fiji -- Former San Francisco 49ers running back Jarryd Hayne has failed in his bid to win selection in the Fiji rugby sevens team to compete at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.Hayne pre-empted a scheduled announcement by the Fiji Rugby Union with a Facebook post Monday saying his time with the Fiji squad has ended. The former National Rugby League star who won a place on the 49ers roster as a rookie last year said he met with Fiji coach Ben Ryan last Friday and agreed he hasnt done enough to win Olympic selection. As much as I would have loved to go to Rio, I too knew I wasnt ready yet, he said. During my time with the team I pushed my body above and beyond. I used all my experience as a professional athlete and have tried every day and in every way possible to make this team and make it better but unfortunately, time has been against me.Fiji will start as favorite to win the gold medal at Rio de Janiero in the first Olympic rugby tournament since 1924. The Fijians won the World Sevens Series title in the season just ended, holding off South Africa and New Zealand, and have won the world championship of sevens in consecutive years.Hayne was a late addition this season, after quitting the NFL, and struggled to adapt to the pace and fitness demands of sevens -- a modified version of the traditional rugby in which teams play several matches in tournaments which last two to three days.Ive loved every minute of training with the Fiji Rugby 7s, Hayne said. Not only are they back-to-back world champions but they are a bunch of guys who have welcomed me into the team as one of their own family.Hayne, who has played rugby league for Australia, said his time with the Fiji team was an amazing journey for me and a truly humbling experience.Haynes post suggests he wont pursue his career in rugby sevens any further. Australian media reports suggest he is likely to return to the National Rugby League, though he is thought also to have been courted by Australian rugby union teams. For now, Ill be in camp with the team until mid-week before heading back home to Sydney for some time out and will determine my next steps from there, he said. Ill enjoy watching from afar and wish the team all the best of luck on their road to Rio.Coach Ryan will announce his Olympic squad later in the week. He said time had always been against Hayne and he had no choice but to tell him his journey towards Rio had come to an end.It was a very short runway for him to get to the fitness levels and understanding needed and go past any of our current squad members, Ryan said. Knowing that, we both also felt it was worth giving it a crack and seeing how far he could go.He also added hugely to the squad with his attitude off and on the field and I have no doubt this has improved everyones performance levels and helped the team in their pursuit of Olympic success. In addition, SSNHQ has been told Southgate will expect financial parity with both his predecessors and other external candidates when he enters into negotiations with the Football Association on Monday.Southgates four-game stint in interim charge came to an end on Tuesday, and FA chief executive Martin Glenn has told SSNHQ that Southgate is in a strong position, but did not rule out interviewing other candidates. FA chief executive Martin Glenn says he been impressed with Gareth Southgate Glenn said: Gareth is in a strong position because, not just the fact the last four games showed a lot of signs of encouragement, but the fact hes worked in the FA for the last couple of years, ran the U21s well, understands how the international set-up works.Southgate spoke in the build-up to Englands game against Spain of the importance of continuity, and with that in mind it is understood he feels a contract until the end of the 2018 World Cup would not be in his, but more importantly the teams best interests. Graeme Le Saux insists the selection process he is part of is important While Southgate is expected to acknowledge he has less experience than Allardyce and Hodgson, other financial factors will play a part during negotiations, such as what it would cost in compensation to appoint a manager who is currently employed, as well as the earning potential for a manager in the Premier League.Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew and Aston Villas Steve Bruce - both considered to be viable contenders for the role in the summer and when Allardyce was sacked - are understood to earn more than £2m per year on their respective club deals, which both have multiple years to run, bringing compensation into play were they to be considered by the FAs five-man selection panel. The cost of hiring Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger at the end of the season would negate the need to pay compensation as he is out of contract in the summer of 2017, yet his wage demands would be considerably higher than any other candidate.Upgrade to Sky Sports now to watch Man Utd v Arsenal this Saturday and get the first six months half price!
