Deciphering swingThe first ball of the day didnt move in the air but tailed back in after pitching. The seam was pointing towards third slip, which should have taken the ball away but it didnt. James Anderson is a great bowler because of his masterful wrist and one could easily assume that the ball in question came back in because he flicked his wrist at the point of delivery. But perhaps that wasnt the case, for an identical ball (same wrist and seam position) last night went away from Ajinkya Rahane. Whats happening here? Is trusting the seam position to decipher the swing a bad choice? Anderson has a slightly open action for an outswing bowler and the moment he doesnt finish the action nicely, the ball doesnt move away in the air or off the pitch. It tends to happen at the start of a new spell. Remember the first ball after lunch on the first day? It drifted on to Virat Kohlis pads even when Anderson had 7 fielders on the off-side.Kohlis footwork on the driveWhen Kohli started as a young first-class batsman, he had a really short and across front-foot stride. He worked around it by playing the ball really late. But once in a while, he would find himself in a tangle because of the nature of his stride. If theres one thing that Kohli has changed it is his head position in the stance and that has not only led to a better understanding of where his off stump is but also allowed him to have a long forward stride as opposed to the earlier short and across stride. Nowadays, its worth watching his front-foot defence and drives from the square angle, for it reminds you of his evolution as a batsman.Sahas Moeen misjudgementWriddhiman Saha was lbw to Moeen Ali after went back to a ball that was not particularly short. There is something about Moeen that encourages you to go back, for he bowls a flatter trajectory and the moment a batsman sees the flatter line, he gets tempted to stay back. This error of judgement tends to happen more often when either you are new at the crease or Moeen is at the start of a new spell. Shami finds the sweet spotAlastair Cooks trigger movement is really pronounced and takes him deep inside the crease. Whenever you see a batsman with such a trigger movement, its believed that if you pitch the ball fuller, you will have him in a spot of bother. In theory it looks very simple but when you look at Cooks Test record, you realise that it isnt as simple after all. There are a couple of aspects to Cooks technique - since he is acutely aware of his off stump, he leaves the ball really well. So, if you pitch full and outside off, he is equipped to let them go. Then if you bowl a little too straight, you end up playing to his strengths, for he is really strong off his legs. Since his front-foot stride is either marginal or non-existent, hes also mindful of the fact that pushing hard with hands would land him in trouble. But once in a while, early on in his tenure, he will get an ideal delivery that dismisses him. Mohammed Shami found that length and line on the delivery that saw the back of Cook.Roots response to variable bounceThe first ball of the seventh over stayed really low and Joe Root was fortunate to get his bat down in time. Once that happens to you, you try and play everything off the front foot with a vertical bat but its easier said than done against bowlers operating close to 90 mph. It is also tough to forget about years of conditioning with regards to your response against the short ball. Root decided to do something spectacular on the following ball - he stepped down the pitch and flicked it for four. Its rare to see that in the seventh over of a new Test innings but the idea was to be proactive instead of waiting for the next ball to stay low. Cheap Air Max Plus Wholesale . BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana finally took advantage of its opportunities Saturday night and delivered a signature Big Ten win for coach Kevin Wilson.Richard Lagow caught one touchdown pass and threw for two more. The Hoosiers forced Michael Geiger to try a 49-yard field goal after back-to-back sacks. And after Griffin Oakes missed his third field goal of the game, a leaping call against No. 17 Michigan State gave him a second chance and he made a 20-yarder two plays later to complete an improbable come-from-behind 24-21 upset over the Spartans. The exuberant Hoosiers ran down the field to get their hands on the Old Brass Spittoon, the series trophy that they hadnt won since 2006.Theyre excited about winning, Wilson said. I think they knew if we played hard and got into the fourth quarter that wed have a chance and we did.Indiana (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) won its s first overtime game in six years and got its second win in 26 tries over a ranked foe, but it wasnt easy. The Hoosiers nearly won it in regulation with a goal-line stand, after a replay review overturned a tying TD run by the Spartans. Instead, Michigan State quarterback Tyler OConnor found a wide open Josiah Price for a 2-yard TD pass with 11 seconds to go to tie the score. In overtime, after Geiger pushed his kick to the left, Oakes also missed his to the left before the leaping call on Drake Martinez.Michigan State (2-2, 0-2) has lost back-to-back games for the first time since November 2012 despite holding the usually prolific Hoosiers scoreless until the final minute of the third quarter.Great drive at the end of the game to tie it up, but not very good in overtime -- thats for sure, coach Mark Dantonio said. We were sacked twice, we jump over the pile. Very disappointed. Now we have to claw our way back into things.THE TAKEAWAYMichigan State: The Spartans knew they faced a big challenge after Connor Cook & Co. graduated. But nobody in East Lansing could have expected a 0-2 start in conference play. Now the defending Big Ten champs no longger control their own destiny, either, falling two games behind No.dddddddddddd 2 Ohio State, No. 4 Michigan and unbeaten Maryland in the East Division.Indiana: The Hoosiers turnaround continues. After making the postseason for the first time since 2007 last year, they now have two trophies -- the Old Oaken Bucket and spittoon -- on campus for the first time since 2001.POLL IMPLICATIONSMichigan State: The Spartans will likely slide out of the rankings this week and will find it tough to make it back in without an upset of the Wolverines or Buckeyes -- or both -- later this season.Indiana: The Hoosiers victory may garner some votes but probably not enough to move into the rankings.BIG PLAY SPARTANSOConnors 86-yard TD pass to R.J. Shelton was the longest by an opponent in Memorial Stadium, breaking the previous mark of 82 yards set by the Spartans in 2008. It also was the fourth-longest pass play against the Hoosiers, matching the length of a TD pass Kirk Gibson caught in 1978.INJURY REPORTThe most significant injury was to Michigan State cornerback Darian Hicks, who left with what appeared to be a hip or waist injury. Dantonio did not provide an update after the game. The Spartans had several players leave during the game but the others to be serious. Michigan State played without linebacker Riley Bullough for the second straight week. Indiana didnt appear to sustain any additional injuries but played again without right tackle Dimitric Camiel (back) or right guard Dan Feeney (concussion).UP NEXTMichigan State: Next weekend, the Spartans host BYU but they cant afford another slip up. They need to start building momentum for the Big Ten race.Indiana: The Hoosiers visit No. 2 Ohio State next weekend, a team theyve challenged in recent years but still havent beaten since 1990 -- or in Columbus since 1987.---Online:AP college football coverage at www.collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
