Basketball in China is thriving and its rapid growth has seen the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) breeze past Australias National Basketball League (NBL), according to Shanghai Sharks assistant coach Brian Goorjian.Goorjian, 62, spent two decades as a coach in the NBL, winning six titles with three different teams while also spending seven years as head coach of the Australian national team, and he says even the best Australian sides will struggle to challenge those in China. When I was in Australia, basketball was seen as a second-tier sport, Goorjian told ESPN.But there is no doubt it is a first-class sport with a buzz [in China].When I first came here, the basketball was rough and raw. But over the last six years -- with the amount of money that has been put into the development programs and the involvement of the NBA -- its grown enormously. I think the top four teams [in China] are capable of winning the NBL.Goorjian got a feel for Chinese basketball and its tremendous potential for growth when he coached Australia at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. After parting ways with the Boomers later in the year, Goorjian elected to make a coaching name for himself in China and made the move to Shanghai.Basketball in China has since boomed and now, after soccer, its the second-most popular sport in the country with roughly the same amount of registered players as American citizens. More than 200 million Chinese people tune in for every national team game, meaning theres more basketball fans in China than any other country in the world.Every aspect of basketball in China is impressive, Goorjian told ESPN.The Chinese love their basketball. When you come here from coaching in Melbourne, and youre involved in the basketball, its like you have moved from the NBL to the AFL. It really feels like Im part of a Collingwood or Carlton, Goorjian said, referencing two of the oldest and best supported clubs in Australian Rules football, which each offer their players world-class training facilities.Everything from the television package, the clothing, the training facilities, the support and sponsorship, its all first class and amazing in China.Goorjian highlights the ability to sign household basketball names as another reason China is a step ahead of Australia.Former NBA players Delonte West and Michael Beasley have both enjoyed a two-year stint in China, while three-time NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas spent a year at Goorjians Sharks. The imports are players that Australia has never seen before, Goorjian said. They do it because theyre highly paid but also because of how well theyre treated here and for the growth of the game. Freshman Justin Herbert, a local prospect out of Sheldon High School in Eugene, was listed as Prukops backup for the opener following a competition with Terry Wilson and Travis Jonsen.UC Davis coach Ron Gould remembers Prukop well.I have a lot of bad memories playing against that young man, Gould told the Sacramento Bee newspaper. We know Dakota is a tremendous athlete, a good quarterback. He can beat you with his arm, beat you with his feet.Despite his success against the Aggies, Prukop is still looking for the Aggies to challenge the Ducks.Theyre going to come out and theyre going to be looking for an upset, Prukop said. This team isnt going to lay down. The FCS, the level of play isnt that big of a difference in my opinion.AGGIES QB: As of Thursday, UC Davis coach Ron Gould had yet to name a starter for the game, but both contenders -- C.J. Spencer and Ben Scott -- have experience from last season. Scott, a senior, started the first eight games of the season before he was injured and threw for 1,595 yards and 11 toucchdowns.dddddddddddd Spencer, a sophomore, appeared in seven games and started in the final three. In his final two games he threw for 623 yards and four touchdowns.CONNECTIONS: Gould played defensive back for the Ducks from 1986-87, while former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti played at UC Davis. Current Aggies assistant Bob Foster was defensive coordinator at Oregon under Bellotti from 1998-99. Former Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti is also a UC Davis alum.LAST TIME OUT: Oregon went 9-4 last season, ending on a sour note with a 47-41 triple-overtime loss to TCU in the Alamo Bowl. UC Davis, a member of the Big Sky conference, has had back-to-back 2-9 seasons.ROYCE ROLLS: Running back Royce Freeman, who is getting some Heisman mentions, in knocking on the door of several Oregon records. He needs 21 rushing touchdowns to surpass the Ducks career record set by LaMichael James, and 1,882 rushing yards to surpass James for the teams new career mark. For comparisons sake, last season as a sophomore he rushed for 1,836 yards and 17 touchdowns.ABOUT THE D: The Ducks have installed a new 4-3 defense under new defensive coordinator Brady Hoke, the former head coach at Michigan. There will be three new starters on the defensive line to help shore up a unit that allowed 37.5 points per game, most in the Pac-12 last season.OLYMPIAN EFFORT: Quarterbacks coach David Yost said Oregon wide receiver Devon Allen could play against UC Davis. Allen missed fall camp because he was at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, where he placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdle final. Weve yet to find anyone that can run with him or even close to him, Yost said. Hes been taking a lot of reps this week, so my guess is hell be out there running around, catching passes. cheap falcons jerseyscheap ravens jerseyscheap bills jerseyscheap bears jerseyscheap bengals jerseyscheap cowboys jerseyscheap lions jerseyscheap texans jerseyscheap colts jerseyscheap jaguars jerseyscheap chiefs jerseyscheap rams jerseyscheap dolphins jerseyscheap vikings jerseyscheap saints jerseyscheap giants jerseyscheap jets jerseyscheap eagles jerseyscheap steelers jerseyscheap 49ers jerseys ' ' '
